Slaves to Righteousness: Understanding True Obedience

Apr 12, 2026    Pastor Josh Smith

What does it mean to be truly free? In Romans 6:15-23, Paul reveals a powerful truth: we're all slaves—either to sin leading to death, or to righteousness leading to life.

Before Christ, we were owned by sin. But Jesus became sin on the cross so that we could become the righteousness of God. He paid our debt with His blood and transferred our ownership. Now we belong to Him—completely.

Being a slave to righteousness means absolute, compulsory, consistent, exclusive, and loyal obedience. Not when it's convenient or easy, but always. Through the Holy Spirit's power, we can live out this calling. The question is: Are you living as a slave to sin or a slave to God? Your loyalty is tested every single day.

"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23)
